Karen Hall's novel "Pursuing Love" is a story of love, corruption, and suspense set in Victorian London. It features a hero who is gunning for a promotion, a heroine bent on social reform, and the commotion that occurs when their paths and agendas intersect over the future of a young street thief. I found this to be a very pleasant read, well-written and with colorful and lively characters who truly came to life for me.
With all of the historical stories about London "society" out there, it was a pleasant change of pace to find one that features the "common" man of Victorian England, those who live on their salaries rather than on their riches. In Pursuing Love, the author does a good job conveying the environment and the people, the smells and filth of the street, the disquiet that exists even with - or possibly due to - the presence of the "peelers," or police officers.
The two lead characters in this story, Nick and Sharyn, are a very appealing duo. While the combination of ex-con and police officer at first seems highly improbable, we find out as the story progresses that these two have more in common than they initially might want to admit. Nick starts out seeming stern and impossibly rigid, but we soon begin to understand the motivation behind his ambitions. He is very much a hero and is almost too good to be true. How can you not love a man who likes children and is willing to admit to his mistakes? The connection between him and Sharyn is sweet, and I found myself wanting to see them overcome their differences and make a relationship work. To complement these two, Ms. Hall gives us a cast of secondary characters who are well-drawn and pretty believable, from the adorable Little Jack and the distrusting adolescent Lacy "Lightfingers" to the various police officials and constables that are Nick's associates.
Along with the love story, "Pursuing Love" has a well-maintained thread of suspense that runs throughout it. Whether the tension is over the financial future of the school, Lacy's nocturnal wanderings, or possible corruption in the police force, there is always is enough conflict to keep the reader fully involved in the story as it builds to a climax.
Overall, I found this to be a very enjoyable story and reading it to be time well spent. It captured and held my attention for the duration of the story, charmed me with its love story, and entertained me with its action and intrigue. I will definitely be checking out Ms. Hall's backlist to see what else she has to offer us.

Pursuing Love Karen Hall 9781601546296 Books Reviews
A reformed thief, Sharyn Winslow is determined to save her school for women. A determined detective, Nick Tyler needs to solve one more case to insure his promotion to inspector and vindicate the murder of his parents. Working together is definitely not what either of them wants, especially when he was the policeman that put her behind bars. The sparks that fly when they are together is something neither is prepared to accept. The secondary characters are fabulous and help make this the suspenceful story that it is.
Karen Hall knows 1896 London. I loved this book! There are many exciting plots that Miss Hall brings together brilliantly. I lost sleep, unable to put down this book.
Karen Hall's Pursuing Love was a suspenseful, romantic story that kept my interest from beginning to end.
A very pleasant romp through Victorian England. A stalwart hero, a virtuous, for the most part, heroine and Dickensian orphans all help to make this saga quaint and uplifting!
I enjoyed watching Sharyn and Nick fall in love in this clever, well-written romance. The writer seamlessly weaved the mystery, the adventure, and the romance. A wonderful way to spend a holiday, curled up with a copy Pursuing Love.
In London in 1896, Sharyn Winslow is on a crusade to help as many orphaned children as she can. The more troubled a child is, the more determined Sharyn is to save the orphan. She is uniquely qualified because she was an orphan herself. She also has a troubled past and even spent time in jail.
The detective that put Sharyn in jail was Nicolas Tyler, a handsome and stubborn policeman that believes in strict enforcement of the law. Sharyn couldn't be happy enough to never see Nick again, but she does. She finds herself having to work with the detective when she interferes with Nicolas arresting a young orphan for stealing. She promises to take responsibility of the small girl and keep her out of trouble.
Nick's philosophy is simple--once a criminal, always a criminal. He doesn't believe the young child will stay out of trouble. He doesn't believe Sharon, a former criminal herself, can possibly reform the child.
Will Sharyn's love be powerful enough to reform the young thief? Can Sharyn make a believer out of Nick? Will love overcome the odds?
PURSING LOVE by Karen Hall is a wonderfully sweet story about love and acceptance. Reading this story made this reviewer believe that people truly can change. Perhaps the greater lesson is that just one person can make a difference in the world.
